An edge of the seat TISSOT Grand Prix of Doha sees GASGAS Gaviota Aspar rider Izan Guevara race into the top six after undergoing medical checks just 60 minutes before the start. Meanwhile GASGAS Gaviota Aspar's Sergio Garcia missed out on further championship points despite showing blistering podium-worthy form.

  • Junior Moto3 Champion Izan Guevara finishes sixth after dramatic high speed spill during the race warm up
  • Sergio Garcia battled into the top ten from a pit lane start but denied points after a spill on the penultimate lap ultimately placing him 23rd
  • Both GASGAS Gaviota Aspar Team riders are now focused on an exciting European tour opener in Portimao in two weeks time

As the sun set on the Losail International Circuit, the Moto3 World Championship's middle east tour showdown truly sent pulses racing. Blistering lap speeds, last minute crashes and jaw dropping racing all punctuated the 18 lap event - not least for the GASGAS Gaviota Aspar Team aboard their all-new GASGAS RC 250 GP race bikes.

Former FIM CEV Moto3 Junior World Champion Izan Guevara displayed his hardcore credentials after bouncing back from a shocking high speed crash during Sunday’s race warm- up. The 16-year old rookie sensation qualified 8th on the grid, but was caught out by the unpredictable gusts through the fast right hander of turn 5 at Losail. After being declared fit to race following examination in the circuit’s medical centre the 16-year old was back on the grid determined as ever.

Throughout the race Guevara lapped consistently in the mid-pack, where on track battles saw him go bar-to-bar with his rivals, often five abreast down the 1km pit straight. With pin-point accuracy Guevara slip-streamed his way into sixth on the final lap, closing out an action packed two consecutive weekends in fine style.

Team mate and former Moto3 Grand Prix winner Sergio Garcia had initially qualified on the front row for Sunday’s race just 0.099 seconds off pole position. However after a penalty was issued involving Garcia and six other riders, for slowing down during free practice, the 18 year old rider was forced to start from the pitlane.

Despite starting the race with a deficit of more than 9 seconds, Garcia worked hard to reel in the main pack by almost 1.5 seconds per lap, showing the kind of form that had put him in podium placing contention during qualifying. Unfortunately on the penultimate lap Garcia also fell victim to the near 33km/h wind gusts and dusty off-line conditions, and suffered a small crash, dropping him to 23rd.

Looking ahead, both Guevara, Garcia, and the crew of the GASGAS Gaviota Aspar Team are now focussed on a return to European soil with the next round of the Moto3 World Championship hosted at the Portimão Circuit, in the heart of Portugal’s Algarve on April 14. Watch this space.

#28 - Izan Guevara: “I went to the track with a lot of pain in my back, and I did what I could today. In fact it felt like a miracle just to be out there racing, after the big crash in warm up. Today was a big group race and very very close, as is usual in Moto3. It was hard for me to overtake people because I couldn't move around on the bike as quickly as I wanted to. Towards the end I thought 'come on, one last push' and to be honest I'm quite happy with how it finished after the day had started in warm-up. I got into a good rhythm but the crash really meant I didn't have the best feeling that I wanted on the bike. I’ll take a few days to rest now but I’m already excited to race again when we go to Portugal.”

#11 - Sergio Garcia: “Today was very exciting - it was such a fast race with a lot of position swapping between a lot of riders. For sure I really enjoyed the race and the challenge to racing from the back, even if it is extra difficult with the pit lane start. I thought towards the end of the race that we could really rescue the weekend with a good result. Unfortunately it was really disappointing to have that crash on the last lap. I was in a decent place but I didn't feel super-great with the bike today and really had to push. This is racing though and we'll go again in Portimao!”

Jorge Martinez (GASGAS Gaviota Aspar Team Manager): “A really exciting Moto3 race! It was a shame that Sergio had to start from the pitlane but he made a great comeback and was then unlucky to fall so close to the finish. He made a race that deserved to be rewarded with a top five finish. Izan has such a heavy crash in warm-up that we thought he wouldn’t be able to ride but he entered the race, suffered with the pain and we couldn’t ask more than his sixth place today.”
